year 7 - self help

1/6/2019

Term 6, the final term of the year. Everyone is moving up, getting one step closer to the climax – GCSEs, or even A Levels. But soon, many who are reading this will be going through some transition days in Term 6 to get used to being in a new school; almost a new life. But you needn’t fear, this Self Help Page has been specifically designed to help the new Year 7s adjust to this new school...

homework

In Secondary School, you will be given small amounts of homework every night. No, you won’t receive a piece of homework for every subject every night, you should mainly only receive one or two bits of homework a day, depending on what lessons you had that day. Homework is set for either 1 week (which happens mostly) 2 weeks, which tend to be homework projects, which are the equivalent of two weeks’ worth of a subjects homework, and rarely will the deadline be less than a week. You can do homework at home or even at an after school club – Homework Club (if you need some peace and quiet or struggle doing work alone). The good thing about this is that you can ask for help if you need it and other year 7s will be there too, so it can also be a great place to make new friends.

clubs

There are countless clubs you can attend at Fulston Manor, so you’re bound to find at least one that catches your interest. They take place before school, after school and at lunch. There’s almost too many to list ranging from sports to creative writing to radio club and the eco squad. Make sure you visit the school website, hover over students, and click on extra circular activities. Of course the most interesting club is the Newspaper Club which creates articles for the very paper you are reading ‘Fulston News’.

Social concerns

If you’re worried about how you or a child can make friends here at Fulston Manor, you needn’t be. The transition days are designed for the upcoming Year 7s so that they are able to get used to being in a new school. It is also a great opportunity for the Year 7s to make friends and build up the confidence in themselves when it comes to talking to new people. Then, the Year 7s have the Induction Week, where they get an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the school and their peers, as well as getting used to (if they haven’t already) changing classrooms for each subject. After a few weeks of being in school, I guarantee that friends will be made, and it will be as if you had always been at Fulston Manor in no time. Don’t fret too much on this subject, as finding the right social groups in Fulston Manor School is much easier that most would think.

PEER MENTORING

Peer Mentoring is perfect for the Year 7s who may be struggling with any of the listed categories. It usually takes place at a lunch time from Monday all the way to Friday. This is highly suggested to students who may find at the time a new school hard to deal with. Fulston Manor works exceptionally hard to ensure that all students feel happy and safe at school. A quote from the school website: "Please don’t worry quietly to yourself. The specially trained pupils and staff in the Peer Mentoring drop-in centre is T4 Monday to Friday 01:05PM until 01:30PM will be able to help you. Please feel free to drop in for a chat, for advice and support or use the concerns boxes in house areas as these are checked weekly.”
If you have any other concerns or queries please feel free to contact the school for assistance.
